The wound-healing potential of the golden chanterelle mushroom
The golden chanterelle mushroom (Cantharellus cibarius) was found in previous studies to have potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. A study published in the International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms revealed that extracts from the fungus can also be used to hasten the wound-healing process.
- The researchers performed a circular excision and a linear incision on male Wistar rats.
- They divided the animals into four groups: nontreated, treated with vehicle, treated with an ointment containing C. cibarius extract, and treated with the reference drug, madecassol.
- Treatment was once a day and lasted nine days for the excision and 17 days for the incision.
- After the experiment, the researchers gathered wound samples which were put through histopathological analysis. The tests revealed that the treated groups (C. cibarius and madecassol) had the most pronounced improvements.
- The group treated with extracts also showed the lowest concentration of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), indicating an inhibition of inflammatory processes.
The findings supported the medicinal uses of golden chanterelle mushrooms, particularly as an aid in wound healing, because of their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
